Autism Awareness!

Today, was Autism Awareness day, and we wore blue to support our Ian boy. Thanks to all our family and friends who supported him and wore blue as well.

I like to tell people that our family has been extremely blessed with Autism. Ian was diagnosed 2 years ago in July with Autism. We have been so blessed and happy to have Ian in our family. He has been a challenge but brings so many great memories and happiness to our lives. A lot of our life here at home revolves around Ian's schedule of therapies and preschool. Our little Chloe is going to grow up to be some sort of therapist. She is amazing with Ian and always prompting him to sign go, eat or more. It's the cutest thing to see her take care of Ian. Ian and Chloe have so much love for each other. Matthew and I have been so blessed to be their parents. A year ago this summer Ian started ABA therapy. We pick Matthew's job here at home because we were able to get this therapy for Ian. ABA is a applied behavioral therapy. We have seen so many changes and improvements with Ian since starting this therapy. Ian now uses a PECS book to help communicate with us and his therapist. Ian has no consistent words at this point right now, so the PECS is super helpful for him to communicate with us. Ian has started saying a few words though, and I get so excited to pretty much tears when he says them. His words are mama, mom, ahh non ( all done), maa ( more)  and psss ( please). Ian can sign more, all done, please, go, wash and eat. These are all such an improvement from screaming at us for things. Also he will take us to things he wants and put our hand on them to help us know what he wants. This is so helpful now.
We have started some potty training with Ian. It is going to be a long ways until he is completely trained but it's all about the baby steps with him. Because he can't actually tell me he needs to go potty or really cares to tell me, we use the PECS book to tell. Also we set a timer, so every hour I take him. This is pretty much for me to help me remember. Some days he does awesome and keeps dry most the morning and goes every time I put him on the potty. Going number 2 is another story, but it's all about the baby steps. I am just so proud of him for using the potty.
We have just switched ABA therapist. Dani just had a baby the end of February, so she was wanting to stay home with her baby. We hired Kati and we are way excited about her. She is amazing with Ian, and just loves him.
I love looking back to where we use to be with Ian, and the progress he has made. It's so fun to see him grow and learn. I am so thankful for my Heavenly Father who sent Ian to our family and made me a mama. It has been a learning experience. One thing it has taught me is patience for sure. Another thing that is so important in this life as a mom is unconditional love. Ian is so full of love and happiness. He really brings the spirit into our home and reminds us of what is important in this life. Ian, you always put a smile on my face and make us so happy. We love you sweet boy!
